Case Study 2

Timberstick House

An extension to an unassuming rendered single storey house on a leafy Elwood street aimed to capture as much light as possible despite the property’s south facing orientation. Instead of the traditional backyard, the living spaces are arranged around two courtyards that capture the sun at different times of the day, creating different atmospheres and uses.

The perforated staircase filters sun from the morning garden, allowing uninterrupted views from the kitchen into the garden. It also links areas of communal use to those of retreat, such as the upstairs master bedroom which is discreetly hidden behind joinery doors.

Voids and skylights capture Northern light where possible and a reduced materials palette consists of reclaimed brick, timber and metal screens. The new mezzanine also helps to create an open and spacious home despite the small building footprint.
